A Good Profile Pic Can Land You A Dream Job – Or Not. Here’s How To Get It Right!

The Profile Picture

One of the many things that sets nanny agencies apart from all other recruiting firms, is that ours is one of the only industries where profile pictures on resumes are a common practice.

Here at Adventure Nannies, we know that taking a profile picture can be one of the most stressful and challenging parts of filling out an application. It’s important to remember that the families we work aren’t looking for supermodels – they’re looking for someone who seems friendly, approachable, and responsible.

Taking your profile photo should only take a couple of minutes, and can be the difference between a family requesting an interview or getting the wrong impression of you from the beginning.

Here’s How To Get It Right

You’ll Need:

  • A well-lit light-colored or white wall
  • A friend
  • A phone or digital camera
  • A clean, fresh face and shirt without too much makeup, jewelry, or skin
  • A smile!

Step 1

Stand as close to the wall as possible and have your friend who is taking the picture stand about 5 feet away.

Step 2

Smile! Have your friend take 5-6 photos of you. Send your favorite photos to a few buddies and have them rate the images in order of best to worst – feedback is the best way to determine the winning photo!

Step 3

Get introduced to families with confidence, knowing that their first impression of you will be a great one!

Pro Tips:

  1. Look just above the camera lens, instead of directly at it.
  2. If you aren’t happy with the way your smile is turning out, think of something that makes you laugh, and have your friend take a burst of photos while laughing. Sometimes these turn out the best!
  3. Don’t worry about what your outfit looks like. Profile pictures are typically cropped from the shoulders up. Just make sure you have a clean looking and modest shirt on.
  4. Take a deep breath. You look fantastic.

Examples:

Bad Profile Pic:

Here is a sample of a bad profile picture of our founder, Brandy. What would you think of her judgment if this was her profile pic?

  • She’s wearing sunglasses so you can’t see her eyes.
  • Another person is in the photo
  • Her hat (and glasses) make her look unprofessional.

Good Profile Pic:

Here is a much better profile picture of Brandy. She seems approachable, confident, put together, and ready to work for a wonderful family. It’s hard to believe it’s the same person!
