Unschooling To Worldschooling: Private Educators Unravel Alt Ed

Our Favorite Resources For Self-Directed Learning

As more and more families break away from traditional school settings, the plethora of styles, philosophies, and resources has become a daunting mountain of information to navigate. Here at Adventure Nannies, we have had the privilege of placing private educators with some of the world’s most innovative homeschooling, unschooling, and worldschooling families. These top educators have put together this list of their favorite resources for self-directed learning.

Defining The Terms:

Unschooling – “This is also known as interest driven, child-led, natural, organic, eclectic, or self-directed learning. Lately, the term “unschooling” has come to be associated with the type of homeschooling that doesn’t use a fixed curriculum.” – From HoltGWS

Worldschooling – “Worldschooling is in some ways a more positive term for unschooling but it’s also a little bit different: it’s when you temper what you want/are interested in with what’s going on in the world. It’s unschooling beyond your neighborhood without the support of your family and friends and learning and DOING what you gotta do!” – From the Facebook group Worldschooling

Homeschooling  – “Homeschooling occurs when parents take charge of their children’s education — organizing subjects, teaching lessons or arranging for tutors, evaluating progress, and supervising social contacts. Homeschool parents believe that one-on-one attention and individualized study produce the best education possible.” – From Well Trained Mind

Resources For Alternative Education:

John Holt, the man who coined therm “unschooling” in the 1970s has a website with a beautiful array of curated resources for understanding and excelling at self-guided learning.

Hellomundo is a video chat classroom that allows experts to share their knowledge on just about anything. Is your young scholar curious about the rainforest? Ask away! This is also a wonderful platform for traveling educators to make some extra money by providing chats on a topic they are experts on.

For homeschooled students interested in attending a traditional college, Abrome is a wonderful resource that provides one-on-one learning coaches that guide them straight into Harvard.

Howard Gardner – Harvard professor and creator of the Multiple Intelligence Theory. His website is a rabbit hole of exciting ideas and educational philosophies. We’ve spent hours here.

Hippocampus offers free educational resources from middle school to college, with video tutorials including real-world STEM applications. The best part is you can build customized playlists of video content!

Teachers Pay Teachers is a favorite of our educators. It is a site where world-class educators can share their best lesson plans and get paid for them. A win-win for everyone involved.

If you are keeping up with Common Core, Kahn Academy is a wonderful FREE resource on a wide range of topics for 1st grade through college.

i-tunes university is great for on-the-go and at-home self-directed learners alike. Everything can be stored on an iPad (so much easier to pack!) and it’s a great platform for organizing, sharing, and keeping track of your self-lead learner’s materials.

Factory tours! Factory Tours USA has a pretty extensive list, contact any factory and they most likely offer a free tour. Our favorites have included sidewalk chalk factories, Hammond’s Candy, Annie’s Organics, Celestial Seasons Tea Factory and more.

Less Structured Resources Include:

STEAM Kids, Mindful Learning, Figment Creative, Art Pantry, any museum, library, grocery store, backyard, national park, city park, playground, forest, steam, kitchen, vehicle, scrap yard, restaurant, airplane, hot-air balloon show, sidewalk, shopping center, hotel room, tent, furniture store, guest house, office, trade show, circus, movie, play, geocaching, burning man, concert, talent show, poetry reading, book signing, conference, farm… you get the picture.
