Patriotic Playtime: Nanny Tips For Safely Celebrating The 4th Of July

We know fireworks are fun and young kids love holding those sparklers! Unfortunately, fireworks can cause serious harm to children, including devastating burns and other injuries. The best way to keep your nanny kids safe is to not use any fireworks at home. Attend public fireworks displays and leave the lighting to the professionals. If you plan to use fireworks, you must obtain parental approval, and be sure to follow these tips to keep your nanny kids as safe as possible.

Did you know that more than 3,000 children under the age of 15 are sent to the emergency room each year in the United States because of fireworks? Sparklers, which are typically viewed by parents as relatively harmless fireworks for children, account for one-third of the injuries to children under five.

We strongly recommend attending public fireworks displays to avoid any dangerous accidents, but if the parents are hosting a 4th of July party, or you believe that your nanny kids may come in contact with fireworks, please keep these vital tips in mind. Again, if you plan to use fireworks, obviously discuss this with the parents ahead of time and make sure that fireworks are legal in your area.

Fireworks Safety Tips:

  1. Closely supervise children around fireworks at all times.
  2. Little arms are too short to hold sparklers, which can heat up to 1,200 degrees. How about this? Let your nanny children use glow sticks instead. They can be just as fun but they don’t burn at a temperature hot enough to melt glass.
  3. Always have a bucket of water and/or a fire extinguisher nearby. Know how to operate the fire extinguisher properly.
  4. Do not wear loose clothing while using fireworks.
  5. Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass.
  6. Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush, leaves and flammable substances.
  7. Stand several feet away from lit fireworks. If a device does not go off, do not stand over it to investigate it. Put it out with water and dispose of it.
  8. If a child is injured by fireworks, immediately go to a doctor or hospital. If an eye injury occurs, don’t allow your nanny kids to touch or rub it, as this may cause even more damage.

Celebrating our country is a wonderful time to teach your nanny kids about the historical importance of the holiday while enjoying time with their family and friends. However you decide to observe this national holiday, the most important thing you can do is to ensure that your nanny kids are able to safely participate and enjoy the day!
