Household dynamic:
- The heart of this role is supporting the family’s two younger boys, who attend school during the day and enjoy gardening, cooking, building with LEGO, drawing, reading, imaginative play, and spending time outdoors. The family hopes to find someone who notices what interests the children and helps them explore it more deeply through conversation, hands-on projects, and real-world experiences. Their two older brothers are increasingly independent and mainly need reliable transportation to and from school and activities. The family encourages the older boys to look out for their younger brothers and helps the younger children learn to be considerate and respectful.
- Raising thoughtful, capable children with sound judgment is central to family life. The family values curiosity, kindness, responsibility, and a meaningful connection to Chinese language and culture. An involved parent and existing household support allow the educator to focus primarily on the children and child-related responsibilities. Travel is limited and not required, though occasional trips may be considered by mutual agreement. The family hopes to build a lasting working relationship as the children grow.
Ideal candidate:
- The ideal candidate is warm, perceptive, and genuinely enjoys spending time with children. They bring professional experience and a strong understanding of preschool and early elementary development. They know how to turn everyday interests into opportunities to think, create, and solve problems, and how to offer guidance that helps children do more for themselves.
- Project-based learning is a core part of this role. The education-focused nanny should be able to help children develop an interest or question into a project that unfolds over multiple sessions. They will support the children in asking questions, making plans, building or investigating, testing ideas, revising, and reflecting on what they discover. Projects should be appropriate to each child's age and allow the children to shape the ideas and decisions. Possible starting points include designing a structure that can stand on its own, investigating what helps plants grow, or making a book about an outdoor discovery.
- The right candidate is patient with frustration, attentive to social situations, and comfortable maintaining clear, consistent boundaries. They follow the family's established rules and expectations while bringing their own ideas for activities and projects. Any proposed changes to household rules or behavioral expectations must be discussed with the parents before being introduced. This role suits someone who communicates openly, works well with an involved parent and other household staff, and is confident taking initiative within the agreed responsibilities. Planning and preparation are part of the working schedule.
- Responsibilities include providing attentive, engaging care for the two younger children, supporting their safety, well-being, and daily routines, facilitating child-led, age-appropriate projects and hands-on exploration through art, building, science, gardening, cooking, nature, and imaginative play, helping children develop independence, practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and consideration for others through everyday experiences. The nanny will also support after-school routines and homework as appropriate, and drive children to and from school, activities, playdates, and outings. Transportation responsibilities include the older siblings. The nanny is responsible for preparing activity materials, organizing children's belongings and activity spaces, and involving the children in caring for their things and cleaning up. Coordinate children's activities and playdates, assist with children's parties and occasional family trip activity planning, and handle occasional child-related errands. The candidate shall keep parents informed about the children's interests, projects, progress, and challenges and complete planning and organizational tasks within the agreed working hours, with sufficient time reserved for direct engagement with the children. Any additional family assistant responsibilities will be discussed and agreed upon in advance.
- While not a requirement for the role, the family would love to work with a candidate who has the following:
- A classroom teaching, assistant teaching, after-school education, or other relevant educational background - experienced nannies who demonstrate thoughtful, development-focused care are equally welcome.
- A degree in education, child development, or a related field
- Familiarity with Reggio Emilia or other child-led, inquiry-based approaches.
- Mandarin language skills are a plus; fluency is not required
- Openness to occasional travel with the family, by mutual agreement.
Qualifications:
- 3 years of professional childcare or teaching experience
- Knowledge and experience with preschool and early elementary school-age children
- A strong understanding of child development and demonstrated ability to encourage curiosity, independence, and hands-on learning
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate age-appropriate projects that develop over multiple sessions, with examples of supporting children's questions, experimentation, and revision
- Comfort with daily caregiving, school and activity transportation, and clearly defined, child-related organizational tasks
- Willingness to carefully follow the family's food allergy requirements
- Valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and confidence driving locally
- Experience working in a team or a fully-staffed home
- Partners, family members, and/or pets cannot be housed in any temporary or long-term accommodations provided by the family
